There are so many small kitchen appliances on the market.   Are they all necessary?

What small appliance do you use the most?

What do you have that you rarely use?

My rice cooker is the appliance I use the most. I eat a lot of rice, so I use it often. The next ones would be my toaster oven, basically for heating small items or reheating small amounts of food, and my stand mixer.
I rarely use my food processor – I chop everything by hand, so I basically only use it to puree something. I also rarely use my blender.

The one I use the least is the food processer.  The one I use the most is is the coffee pot.  DW uses the microway the most.  I do most chopping and shredding by hand.  I only use the food processer when I’m making large amounts of food.

My favorite is my Food Saver.  Because there are only two of us, there are lots of leftovers.  I divide them into meals for two and seal them and stick them in the freezer.  Then when I don’t want to, or can’t, cook, I just pull something out and nuke it.

I love my crock pot, too.

One thing I don’t use much is my KA mixer.  It’s just too heavy to pull in and out of the cabinet.  I’d leave it out but when Harry surprised me with it he chose cobalt blue.  Duh!  I don’t like a lot of stuff on my countertops anyway :-)   And I haven’t used my Cuisinart ice cream maker or deep fryer in a couple of years.

Does anyone have a panini press?  If so, do you use it much?

  • Becky:

I usually fix rice in my steamer, don’t have a rice cooker.
I use my KA mixer a lot but mine is on the counter – no way could I lift it in and out of a cabinet.
I use my food processor a lot at times but other times not so much.
Crock pot is used a lot, GF grill seems to be used more in the summer months.
Oh, the food saver is wonderful.  I use it a lot.
I have an immersion blender I use often too.

I use a tiny food processor I have.  Only holds a cup or two and since I have to chop Buddy’s food it gets used all the time.

  • Becky:

Nalani, chopping Buddy’s food would be easier with a small processor.   I think of you often and hope you both are doing okay.

    Hi Becky,  Another good topic.

Oddly enough the ones that get used most are the smaller ones.  I have an electric grater that I use quite often; we make lots of homemade pizza, my stick blender gets used frequently for salad dressing and my mini food processor (3 cup size) is used perhaps twice a month.  That one is great for finely chopping celery, onions and making fresh bread crumbs.  I use these ingredients in quite a few of my recipes.

My food processor is hiding in the pantry (wouldn’t do without it when cooking for a crowd) and my deep fryer will soon be going on the scrap heap.  I just hate cleaning that thing.  I’m going to try doing it the way my Mom did it…with a pot of oil on the stove and a wire basket.  Worked perfectly for her everytime without all that hassel.  Much easier to clean than those complicated gizmos!  Listen to me…sounding like an old lady already but sometimes, simplest is still best.

I don’t know if my toaster would be included in that, because making toast, isn’t really cooking.  If we are counting toasters, then yes, it is the most used one; almost every day.

So interesting hearing what you all use or not use!  Our toaster oven gets a lot of use, the Keurig gets used several times a day mostly for the fast hot water more so than for coffee, love my Food Saver, and the Kitchen Aid mixer.  I’m still lifting that mixer in/out of the cupboard and am considering doing away with the bread box and keeping it out. That is a heavy beast, but I wouldn’t want to do without it!  I bought a KA mixer cover even though the color is neutral.  Oh…and the latest thing I’m liking with this blasted arthritis is the electric jar opener. That thing really works and saves the hands!

My ninja.  It chops so well.

  • hmarx:

My garlic press…hands down…for almost every meal!!!

  • Becky:

I forgot, we use the waffle iron frequently too.

  • Sweets:

Most used are crockpot and also toaster oven. I know neither are actually small but are used all the time. Love my Ninja as well. Love my Food Saver as well but don’t use it as much as I did for meats. My butcher cuts and vacuum seals all my purchases for me so that helps alot.

My KA mixer and small hand mixer are also favorites of mine.
