Apple Pie for a Crowd

Schmittys Apple Pie for a Crowd

Pie Dough for Apple Slices:
4 cups flour
1 cup each shortening (CriscoŽ) and margarine
1/2 cup ice water
2 teaspoons salt in ice water

Preheat oven to 375° F.

Mix flour and shortening as for pie dough. Sprinkle water over dough and mix lightly. More water if needed.

Roll out 1/2 dough and place in cookie sheet (10 x 15) fill with apples. Roll out other 1/2 of dough and place over top.

Brush dough with milk before baking. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. I like to frost with confectioners sugar frosting. May used canned apple slices.

If fresh apples are used be sure to add your usual spices and sugar. I also add cinnamon, raisins, dabs of butter and sprinkle with a little flour (or use minute tapioca to absorb excess juice).

This makes enough for a crowd. Sometimes I made half of the pan apples and half cherries. Everyone has always loved the crust.
