Amish Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce

4 cups bread crumbs (day-old bread)
2 cups milk
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs -- slightly beaten
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup raisins -- optional
1 teaspoon vanilla
Ground cinnamon for top

Vanilla Sauce:
1 cup sugar
3 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon butter
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1 teaspoon vanilla


Preheat oven to 350° F. Place bread crumbs in a buttered 1-1/2 quart baking dish.

In a saucepan, scald milk, then add butter, sugar, eggs, salt, raisins and vanilla. Blend well. Pour over the bread crumbs; sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake at 350 F. 30 to 35 minutes or until top is golden. Cut in squares and serve with warm Vanilla sauce.

For sauce: Mix together sugar and cornstarch well. Add butter, boiling water and vanilla; cook stirring constantly, till thickened but, pourable.
