Brazil Nut Coffeecake Bars

2 cups sifted all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
4 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup soft butter or margarine
1/2 cup soft shortening
1 egg
1 egg separated
1 cup chopped Brazil nuts


Start heating oven to 350 degrees.

Into bowl, sift flour, baking powder, 1 cup sugar and 3 teaspoons cinnamon; add butter, shortening, whole egg, egg yolk. With electric mixer at low speed or "blend" (or with spoon), mix well. Turn into 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 1 inch jelly roll pan; spread evenly with spatula.

With fork beat egg white slightly; brush over dough. Combine remaining 1/3 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and nuts; sprinkle over top of dough.

Bake 25 minutes or till nuts are golden. Cool in pan, then cut into 2 x 1 inch bars.

Makes about 6 dozen.
