Hamburger Chow Mein

SandyOH posted 02-07-99

Hamburger Chow Mein

1 1/4 lbs. lean ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cups sliced celery
1/4 stick margarine
2 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup water chestnuts, sliced
1 (1-lb 12-oz.) can La Choy bean sprouts, drained
1 (4-oz.) can sliced mushrooms, drained

Thickening:
3 tbsp. cold water
3 tbsp. cornstarch
1 1/2 tbsp. soy sauce
1 1/2 tsp. sugar
1 tbsp. La Choy Brown Gravy Sauce (hard to find now!)

Cook ground beef until slightly browned, with onions and celery.

Drain off any excess fat. Add next 4 ingredients.

Bring to a boil and simmer 15 minutes.

Add remaining vegetables; heat through until hot.

Combine thickening ingredients; add to meat mixture, stirring constantly. (It will thicken fast so keep stirring and folding vegetables, etc. so it doesn't scorch).

Serve over hot cooked rice or La Choy Chow Mein noodles.

Serves 6
