Fruit: Dates and Oranges - pareve

Posted by : Karen Selwyn

Last year, I wrote about food which is part of the "Yehi Ratson" ("May
it be Your Will") ceremony during the Rosh Hashanah meal. This Sephardic
ceremony involves blessings over approximately nine types of foods with
specific prayers for a good new year. Since dates is one of the food in
the ceremony, I am sharing this really easy pareve recipe for Rosh
Hashanah. Below, I have included the Yehi Ratson explanation for dates
only. Anyone interested in the complete list of foods can find them in
the archives in the Rosh Hashanah category. Click on Ceremonial Foods.

Dates: the Hebrew word for date (tamar) is close in spelling to the word
"tamah," meaning "cause a sense of wonder and amazement; the prayer
speaks about causing a sense of wonder in the eyes of enemies and making
them acknowledge G-d's Greatness as Sovereign of the World"

Dates and Oranges

5 oranges
1/2 chopped toasted almonds
3/4 cup chopped dates
2/3 cup orange juice
1/3 cup brandy

Peel oranges and slice thinly. Toss slices with dates, orange juice, and
liqueur. Chill several hours. To serve, sprinkle with nuts.

Note: Consider experimenting with an orange-flavored liqueur rather than
brandy.
