Cookies: Date-Nut Squares - pareve

Posted by : Karen Selwyn

2 tablespoons butter
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour
1 teaspon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 cup chopped dry dates, coated with sugar
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
2 eggs
1 tablespoon sweet marsala or sherry or concord grape wine
powdered sugar

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour a 9" square baking
pan.

In a bowl, combine the sugar, flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and
cloves. Add the dates and nuts to the mixture, blending well.

In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with the marsala (or sherry or wine).
Stir the egg mixture into the flour-date mixture.

Spoon the batter into the prepared cake pan, smoothing the top.

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is lightly browned. Remove the
pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle with powdered sugar. While
the baked batter is still warm, cut into bars for serving.

Advance preparation information: This recipe can be prepared up to two
