Challah Basket - pareve

Posted by : Ruth Heiges

prepared challah dough made from 2 1/2 lb. flour
5-6 qt. fruit shaped bowl, oven proof (stainless steel or
tempered glass is okay)
2 egg yolks beaten with a little sugar

For a simcha (happy occasion) or seudah (festive holiday meal)
you might try something original, a bread basket made of challah
dough.

Invert the bowl and grease the outside very well. Braid the
challah dough tightly with 3 very long strands. Wind the braid
of challah around the bowl starting at the rim, and go around
as many times as needed to cover the entire outside of the bowl.
You can also make a woven basket instead of a braided one,
by putting strips of dough around the bowl and weaving other
strips across, in and out. Brush with egg yolks and sugar.
Place your inverted bowl with the woven dough around it on a
well greased baking pan and bake at 350 degrees for 35
minutes or until golden brown.

Remove challah basket very carefully from bowl and return basket
to oven for a few minutes. Then use the same bowl again for
the handle.

Take one strip of braid and place around the rim of inverted
bowl (grease well again) and place on greased cookie sheet.
When finished baking attach handle to basket with toothpicks.

May be filled with challah rolls, hamantaschen, pastries,
fruit etc. Use your imagination!
