Fresh Tomato Soup

1/2 cup chopped onion 
1/4 cup butter or margarine 
1/4 cup flour 
1 cup water 
6 medium tomatoes -- peeled and chopped 
1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley 
1 tablespoon sugar 
1 teaspoon salt 
1/2 teaspoon dried whole thyme 
1/4 teaspoon pepper 
1 bay leaf 
lemon slices -- optional 
addition bay leaves -- optional 
Saute onions in butter in a large Dutch oven 3 minutes or until tender.  
 
Reduce heat to low; add flour, stirring until smooth.  Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. 
Gradually add water; cook over medium heat, stir constantly, until thickned  and bubbly. 
Add next 7 ingredients; bring to a boil.  Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes; remove and discard bay leaf. 
Spoon 1/3 of tomato mixture into blender, and process until smooth.  Repeat procedure with remaining mixture. 
Garnish with lemon and additional bay leaves, if desired.
