  Split Pea Soup
  1 1/2 cup split green peas 
  1 ham bone or ham hock 
  2/3 cup chopped onion 
  1/4 cup diced carrots 
  1/2 cup diced celery 
  1 or 2 potatoes, diced 
  parsley 
  1 clove garlic 
  1 crumbled bay leaf 
  thyme 
  pepper 
  2 cans chicken broth 
  slivered cooked ham 
In large kettle combine peas and 1 qt. water; bring to boil.  Reduce heat; simmer,
  covered,45 minutes, adding more water if necessary. 
Add ham bone and rest of ingredients except ham; simmer covered, 1 1/2 hrs.  
Remove ham bone. 
Press vegetables and liquid through coarse sieve or puree in blender.  
Return to kettle and add ham, reheat slowly til hot.
