Oven-Cooked Beef Brisket

4 to 5 pounds brisket of beef
1 pkg. onion soup mix
1 pkg. dried mushroom gravy mix
1/2 cup dry red wine
1 cup water
2 med. onions, sliced
3 med. potatoes, peeled

Remove all fat from the beef. Place beef in a baking dish (9 x 13) Sprinkle dried mixes over meat. Add wine and water. Top with sliced onion. Cover with foil and bake at 325 degrees for 4 to 5 hours or until beef is tender. Remove beef to let cool. Add potatoes to juice mixture, add more water if necessary. Return to oven and cook until potatoes are tender. When potatoes are cooked place them with the juices into a blender and mix until you have a smooth gravy. Slice beef after it is cold, as it will slice beautifully.

Carrots, celery and garlic can also be added - as an option with the sliced onions.
