Chewies (or Fruit Bars)

1 box brown sugar
3 c. self-rising flour
2 sticks melted margarine
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
2 c. pecans, chopped


Mix all ingredients together and pour into greased and floured cookie sheet.

Bake at 325 degrees for about 45 minutes.

For variations, you can press chopped fruit into the batter after you pour into cookie sheet for fruit bars


Jerry's Fruit Bars

2 c. boiling water
2 c. brown sugar
2 c. raisins
3/4 c. lard
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. allspice
1/8 tsp. salt
2 tsp. soda in 1/8 c. warm water
3 c. flour


Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease a 9x13” pan.

Combine in heavy kettle water, brown sugar, raisins, lard, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, salt and soda. Boil 5 minutes and let stand until lukewarm. Add vanilla. Add flour slowly. Mix well. Bake for 35 minutes in a 13 x 9-inch pan.


Raisin Fruit Bars

1 c. raisins
1/2 c. margarine
2 c. flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. water
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 c. chopped nuts


Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a 9x13” pan.

Boil the raisins in water for 5 minutes. Cool.

Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add cooled raisins.

Sift together dry ingredients. Add to creamed mixture. Add vanilla and nuts.

Bake in greased 9 x 13-inch pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Cut into squares.
