Date Nut Bread

1 cup boiling water
1 cup dates, chopped
1 teaspoon baking soda
4 tablespoons shortening
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped walnuts

In a mixing bowl, pour water over dates. Stir in baking soda and let stand 5 minutes. Cream together shortening and sugar, then egg, beating well. Stir in flour, salt and nuts. Stir in dates, combining alternately.

Line a 10 inch loaf pan with waxed paper and pour in batter. Bake in a preheated oven 350 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes, or until firm.
